Women's Tennis Completes Day Two of Redbird Roundup

NORMAL, Ill. - Despite windy and cool conditions, the Illinois State women's tennis team posted an 11-2 singles mark and 1-5 doubles mark on the second day of the Redbird Roundup at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts Saturday.

The Flight 1 singles final will showcase the Redbirds, as Emmie Marx and Kadi Ilves advanced to the championship match. Marx advanced after defeating St. Louis' Mia Elmore (6-2, 6-1) and Stephanie McLoughlin of Butler (6-2, 6-2). Ilves advanced to the finals after topping Butler's Caroline Hedrick in three sets (6-4,1-6,10-8) and Victoria Cran from Morehead State in two sets (6-3,6-4).

After dropping a close match in the first round, ISU's Phyllis Tigges advanced to the consulation semifinals, defeating Claire McNulty of Dayton (6-4,6-1), before dropping a match to Stephanie Hollis (7-5, 6-0). In Flight 2 singles, Stefanie Youngberg advanced to the finals, after defeating teammate Gabby Phillips (6-2, 6-7 (3), 10-3) and Drake's Mariel Ante (4-6, 7-5, 11-9). Heather Nisbet also advanced to the finals on the consulation side of the bracket, after defeating Maria Toro Moreno (6-7, (4) 6-2, 10-5) from St. Louis, along with Bradley's Meredith McDonagh (6-2, 6-2). Carolina Abello also competed in Flight 2 singles, falling in a second-round match to Dayton's Sammi Hornbarger (6-2, 6-3).

Ashton Nisbet and Sarah Paulson were the lone Redbirds to compete in Flight 3 of singles action. Nisbet defeated Morgan Wright of Morehead State in dominating fashion (6-1, 6-0), while Paulson dropped her match to Drake's Maddia Johnson (6-2, 6-0).



During the doubles competition, the Redbirds had two teams move on to the semifinals of Flight 1. The duo of Youngberg and Ilves dropped a close one to Drake's team of Jordan Eggleston and Klavdija Rebol (8-4), while Marx and Tigges moved on to the semifinals after defeating Hollis and Toro Moreno of St. Louis (8-1), before withdrawing their semifinal match, giving the win to Nel Boyd and Ante from Drake. Ariane Maack and Paulson dropped their Flight 1 semifinal match in the colsulation bracket, 8-2, to McLoughlin and Brittany Farmer of Butler.

Still in doubles action, Phillips and A. Nisbet fell to Katie Boeckman and Hornbarger of Dayton (8-4) in Flight 2. Abello and H. Nisbet dropped their round-two match to Drake's Johnson and Lea Kozulic (8-5).

The Redbird Roundup continues Sunday with the finals of singles and doubles, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts.
