NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team posted an 8-3 singles mark and 2-1 doubles mark on the first day of the Redbird Roundup in Normal. Due to weather, play was split between the Gregory Street Tennis Courts and Evergreen Racquet Club.

Coming off of a second-place finish at the Ball State Invitational in the top singles flight, sophomore Emmie Marx won her first match over Sarah Rodefeld of Bradley 6-1, 6-1. Junior Phyllis Tigges also played in the top singles flight, falling 7-5, 7-5 to Butler's Caroline Hedrick. Lastly, freshman Kadi Ilves beat Saint Louis' Stephanie Hollis 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.

The Redbirds had four players take part in the second singles flight. Junior Gabby Phillips won her preliminary round match over Morehead State's Lissa Pacheco-Brousseau 6-1, 6-4 before advancing against Maureen Stevens of Dayton 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-2 in her first round match. Senior Stefanie Youngberg defeated Bradley's Cassia Wojtalik 6-2, 6-0, while junior Carolina Abello beat Bradley's Meredith McDonagh 6-0, 6-1. Junior Heather Nisbet fell to Ali Patterson of Drake 6-1, 6-3.

The third singles flight featured junior Ashton Nisbet and freshman Sarah Paulson. Nisbet fell in her prelim match 6-2, 6-0 to Bradley's Adele Henke, while Paulson defeated Dayton's Victoria Marchant 6-1, 6-4 in her prelim match and Butler's Sienna Reuter 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.

All 10 Redbirds are taking part in the doubles competition, forming five teams. Tigges and Marx received a bye into the second round of the first flight, while Ilves and Youngberg combined to beat Stephanie McLoughlin and Brittany Farmer of Butler 8-4. Senior Ariane Maack and Paulson fell to Victoria Cran and Sandrine Beaule of Morehead State 8-2. Abello and Heather Nisbet received a bye into the second round of the second doubles flight, while Phillips and Ashton Nisbet defeated Elizabeth Przystawsk and McDonagh of Bradley 8-6.
