MUNCIE, Ind.- The Illinois State women's tennis team concluded the Ball State Invitational Saturday afternoon posting a mark of 15-9 in singles play and 7-5 in doubles. The Ball State Invitational was the Redbirds' first competition of the 2012 fall season.

On the first day of the competition, rain slowed the pace of play and the student-athletes were forced to compete on the courts much later than expected. In spite of the delays, head coach Chris Hoover felt good about the first day of competition.

"Friday was a nice start to our fall season," Hoover said. "The girls competed until late into the night and didn't let up even during the adverse weather conditions Friday morning. We got off to a great start."

The second day of competition was not interrupted by the weather. Coach Hoover was very pleased with the way his student athletes performed.

"Overall it was a very successful weekend," Hoovier said." "Emmie Marx had a great tournament getting to the finals in her flight."

In singles flight one, Marx earned a second place finish falling to Nimisha Mohan of Miami-Ohio 6-4, 6-1 in the finals. The coaches were very excited to see Marx perform well in the top flight.

"She picked up right where she left off in the spring," Hoover said.

Overall, Marx went 3-1 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles at the competition.

Heather Nisbet and partner Stefanie Youngberg earned a second place finish in their flight falling to top seated Mandy Brown and Stefanie Villajuan of Louisville 8-6.

Gabby Phillips was defeated in the first round of flight four but rallied to win two consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, defeating Brittany O'Reilly of Valparaiso 6-0, 6-0 and Megan McNamara of Wright State 6-1, 6-0.

Overall the team posted a mark of 15-9 in singles play and 7-5 in doubles at the competition, with many of the student-athletes rallying from early losses to the consolation finals.

Due to the lengthy delays during competition, the consolation finals were not played out. Senior Ariane Maack did not compete in the competition.

The Illinois State women's tennis team returns to Normal next weeking and will host six teams at the annual Redbird Round-up. The competition begins at 10am Friday morning and play will continue through Sunday.
