Redbirds Finish Season with MVC Semifinal Defeat to Top-seeded Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan.-The Illinois State women's tennis team (10-13, 5-4 MVC) finished its season with a loss in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Team Championships to top-seeded Wichita State (14-10, 9-0 MVC), 4-0, on Saturday, April 27, in Wichita, Kan.

"I thought we played pretty well at doubles today and I really felt that doubles were the key but we let it get away from us at the No 1 and No. 2 positions and ended up conceding the point," head coach Chris Hoover said. "We went into singles like a car with a flat tire. We just couldn't ever get anything going. Today was a tough day. I wish it would have ended better for our senior Stefanie (Youngberg) butthe student-athletes fought very hard throughout this season. Next year we are going to come back better."

In doubles, the Redbirds were ambushed, as strong play from the hosting Shockers set them on their heels early. At No. 2 doubles, Emmie Marx and Stefanie Youngberg were defeated by Rebecca Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque, 8-3, to open the match. At No. 1 doubles, Phyllis Tigges and Kadi Ilves were then defeated by Lucia Kovalova and Veronika Blaskova, 8-4, capturing the team point for the Shockers.

Singles began with a 1-0 Wichita State advantage and things continued to go the Shocker's way. Wichita State was able quickly close out the Redbirds with wins at the No. 5, No. 2, and No. 3 singles positions, and securing a spot in the MVC Team Championships final round.

At the No. 5 position, Youngberg dropped her match to S. Mahajaroenkul, 6-0, 6-0 to open singles play. Tigges went down to Julia Schiller soon after, 6-3, 6-2. Finally, Carolina Abello lost to Kovalova, 6-41, 6-0, ending the match at a score of, 4-0 in favor of the Shockers.
