Redbirds Advance to Semifinals after Defeating Evansville

WICHITA, Kan.-The Illinois State women's tennis team (10-12, 5-3 MVC) advanced to the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Team Championships with a victory over fifth-seeded Evansville (10-11, 3-5 MVC), 4-0, on Friday, April 25, in Wichita, Kan.
The match began outside, but play was moved indoors due to rain. In doubles, the Redbirds came out strong in spite of the adverse conditions. No. 3 doubles partners Carolina Abello and Heather Nisbet secured a win early against Gaby Fifer and Marina Moreno, 8-3 to open the match. No. 2 doubles partners Emmie Marx and Stefanie Youngberg then defeated Kelsey Costales and Emily Richardson, 8-3, and secured the team point and a 1-0 advantage for Illinois State heading into singles.
In singles the Redbirds continued to battle with wins at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 positions securing the victory over Evansville. At No. 2 singles, Phyllis Tigges handled Marketa Trousilova, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Abello defeated Marina Moreno, 6-3, 6-2. Finally, at No. 4 singles, freshman Kadi Ilves defeated Mina Milovic, 6-3, 6-2 and secured the win.
The Redbirds will now face off against top seeded Wichita State in the semifinals (13-10, 8-0 MVC). The Shockers are the defending MVC team champions and earned the top seed in the tournament with a perfect record in conference play this season. Wichita State advanced to the semifinal with a victory over the Bradley Braves, 4-0.
Over the last three years, the Redbirds and the Shockers have met three times in the final match of the MVC Team Championships, and the Redbirds have finished runner-up each time. At their last meeting on April 13, the Redbirds fell to the Shockers, 5-2, at Wichita State.
The Redbird's semifinal match against Wichita State will be played on Saturday, April 27. The match will take place at the Crestview Tennis Courts in Wichita, Kan. with play set to begin at 1 p.m.
