OMAHA, Neb. - The Illinois State women's tennis team fell to Missouri Valley Conference leader Wichita State, 4-0, Saturday in the semifinals at the 2009 State Farm MVC Championship at Creighton's Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center. The loss ends the Redbirds' spring season with an overall record of 14-10 and a 6-4 Valley mark.

"It was a bad way to end the season," said head coach Chris Hoover. "We did not play well today, and Wichita State just outplayed us."

The semifinal matchup began with doubles play as it was moved indoors due to weather. Wichita State's No. 1 pairing of Anna Egorova and MVC Freshman of the Year, Lutfiana Budiharto, bested ISU's Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt, 8-1. At the No. 2 position, the Redbird duo of Natalia Lech and Tanja Hrovatic fell to Stephanie Dalmacio and Florentina Hanisch, 8-3, snapping their three-match winning streak.

The Shockers clinched the semifinal victory with wins at the No. 1, 2 and 4 positions. Zubkova fell to Egorova, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1, while Natalia Lech lost to Budiharto, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2. At the No. 4 position, Steinhardt fell to Dalmacio in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

With the win, No. 1 Wichita State remained undefeated in Valley play with a Valley mark of 10-0 and overall record of 20-5, winning 40 of its last 43 MVC matches.
