NORMALThe Illinois State Women's tennis team (9-11, 4-2 MVC) defeated the UNI Panthers (7-10, 1-5 MVC), 6-1, on Saturday April 20 at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill.

"This was a good win for us," head coach Chris Hoover said. "I liked the way we came out in singles and doubles, even though we let our foot off the gas and they seemed to come back on us. But all in all, this was a good win and I hope tomorrow we can improve our standing in the conference."

In doubles, the Redbirds came out strong with Heather Nisbet and Carolina Abello quickly defeating Lindsay Cayton and Trisha Hinke, 8-1 at the No. 3 spot. However, the Panthers countered at No. 1 doubles with Kadi Ilves and Phyllis Tigges dropping their match to Phoebe Walker and Krissy Lankelma, 8-6. In the end, Emmie Marx and Stefanie Youngberg were able to come away with a victory at No. 2 doubles over Jessica King and Chelsea Moore, 9-8 (3) to secure the team point for the Redbirds.

Singles began with a 1-0 Illinois State advantage and the Redbirds did not let up the intensity. Right out of the gate, Youngberg played with strong at No. 5 singles, dominating Cayton, 6-0, 6-0 in a shut-out victory. Nisbet finished next in a matching fashion at No. 6 singles, defeating Hinke, 6-0, 6-0. Abello finished after Nisbet at No. 3 singles, defeating Moore, 6-0, 6-2 and secured the team victory for the Redbirds.

Now the Redbirds must quickly prepare themselves to battle the Bulldogs on Sunday. Drake has had success this season in conference play setting a mark of 3-2 heading into the final weekend of conference competition before the MVC Team Championships. The Bulldogs have lost two of their last three competitions, dropping close matches to Southern Illinois and Wichita State, 4-3 before defeating Evansville, 4-3.

As the only senior, Youngberg will play her final match at Illinois State's Gregory Street Tennis Courts against Drake. Youngberg and Abello are tied for the second most singles victories on the team with 19 wins each. Additionally, Youngberg was a runner-up at the Missouri Valley Individual Championships in the fall and Abello earned a singles championship.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the match against Drake will now begin at 9 a.m. CT on Sunday and will be played inside at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
