Women's Tennis Claims Fifth MVC Win

WATERLOO, Iowa. - The Illinois State women's tennis team defeated Northern Iowa, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon to claim its fifth Missouri Valley Conference win of the season. Senior Julia Zubkova sealed the win for the Redbirds at the No. 3 singles court by defeating Sampada Kanade, 6-3, 6-3.
"We came out and played today," head coach Chris Hoover said. "We want to get one more win (Sunday) and get a shot in the tournament. I don't think we're done playing this season."
The Redbirds started strong by claiming the early doubles point. Ariane Maack and Natalia Lech defeated Kanade and Jessica Kunzelmann, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. Regular No. 3 doubles team Hannah Esker and Carmen Peters bested Stefannia Sampaio and Katy Delagardelle, 8-4.
"We played like veterans today," Hoover said. "It was an intense match and everyone kept it up (Saturday)."
In singles, Esker gained the first point for Illinois State with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep over Delagardelle at the No. 6 court. With the win, Esker collected her 15th singles victory and remains undefeated in conference play and continues on an eleven-match winning streak. Esker sports a 21-6 overall record and is 16-3 in the spring with a 6-0 conference mark.
Lech was the last Redbird standing at the No. 4 singles court where she defeated Kunzelmann, 6-3, 6-4.
Illinois State now holds a 15-5 record on the year with a 5-1 Valley mark. ISU will finish its regular season schedule on Sunday against the Drake Bulldogs. The first serve is set for 10 a.m. at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
