Redbirds Drop Match to Wichita State, 5-2 on the Road

WICHITA Kan.-The Illinois State Women's tennis team (8-11, 3-2 MVC) finished the match against Wichita State (9-10, 4-0 MVC) strong, but the final effort was not enough to avoid the, 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Shockers on Saturday, April 13 in Wichita, Kan.

Illinois State's Emmie Marx and Carolina Abello were the last to finish for the team with each earning a victory at the No.1 and No.3 singles positions against the Shockers. Marx defeated Rebecca Pedrazzi, 6-4, 7-6 after Abello defeated Lucia Kovalova, 6-4, 6-3 earning the only points for the team on the day.

In doubles, the Shockers struck first at the No.2 spot as Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque quickly defeated Marx and Stefanie Youngberg, 8-1. Illinois State partners Abello and Heather Nisbet fell in similar fashion to Wichita State's Montse B. Fernandez and S. Mahajaroenkul, 8-1 as well. At No.1 doubles, Redbird partners Kadi Ilves and Phyllis Tigges continued to battle with the point already decided, defeating Kovalova and Veronika Blaskova, 8-5.



Singles began with the Redbirds trailing Wichita State by a score of 1-0. The Shockers came out aggressively in singles, as Julia Schiller defeated Tigges at the No.2 position, 6-3, 6-4. The match continued to play out in the Shockers favor as the Wichita State picked up wins at the No.4, No.5 and No.6 positions to seal the team victory.

The Illinois State women's tennis team is back in action at home on Saturday, April 20 against UNI. The match against UNI is the first of two on the weekend as the Redbirds will also square off on Sunday, April 21 against Drake. The match against UNI is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT and the match against Drake is set to begin at 10 a.m. CT.
