Redbirds Fall to Southern Illinois, 6-1 on the Road

CARBONDALE, Ill.-The Illinois State Women's tennis team (7-10, 2-1 MVC) was defeated by Southern Illinois (12-3, 2-0 MVC), 6-1 on Saturday, April 6 in Carbondale, Ill.

"We are just struggling to find our way. We just have a lot of almost it seems like. We almost played pretty well today. We almost had it in doubles. It's just tough," head coach Chris Hoover said. "I'm not mad. I feel mostly just a little sad right now and it falls on me. I have to try and figured it out how to help this team. Tomorrow is an important match for us. Hopefully we come out with the energy and intensity we need to get back in the win column."

In doubles, Stefanie Youngberg and Emmie Marx made a stand at the No.2 spot, defeating Southern Illinois's Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishima in a close match, 8-7 (11-9). However, Southern Illinois was able to rebound, seizing wins at the No.1 and No.3 positions and taking the team point in doubles.

Singles began with a, 1-0 lead for the Salukis as both teams continued to battle. Play was tight, with matches at No.1 and No.3 singles being decided in three sets in favor of the Salukis. Kadi Ilves was strong at No.4 singles for the Redbirds, easily handling Dien, 6-2, 6-0. Ultimately, Southern Illinois took the rest of the singles matches, ending the match, 6-1.



The match against the Salukis marked the second consecutive conference matchup for the team and the third conference matchup overall. The Salukis hold the best team record in the Missouri Valley Conference as well as a perfect 5-0 record at home.

Now, the team will travel to Evansville to compete in its second conference match of the weekend. The Purple Aces have struggled this year but are a tough team to beat on the road, holding a home record of 4-1. Most recently, Evansville was defeated by Southern Illinois, 6-1. Also, Evansville is on a three match losing streak. The match against Evansville set to begin at 10 a.m. CT in Evansville, Ind.
