ISU Women's Tennis Wins First MVC Match Over Bradley, 6-1

The Illinois State women's tennis team earned its first Missouri Valley Conference win Friday after defeating Bradley, 6-1, in Peoria, Ill. With the win, the `Birds are now 5-6 overall on the season with a 1-0 record in conference play.
The Redbirds gained an early lead after claiming the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. Hannah Esker teamed up with Ariane Maack at the No. 2 position to beat Sarah Rodefeld and Meredith McDonagh , 8-2, while Carolina Abello and Sarah Streitz defeated Ashley Roth and Brigitte Graf, 8-2, at the No. 3 position. At the No. 1 spot, Aniko Kiss and Phyllis Tigges were the only `Birds to lose, falling to Nicole Miller and Adele Henke, 8-6.
In singles action, Kiss was unable to defeat Miller, losing 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot, with Tigges defeating Rodefeld in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5, at the No. 2 position. Abello beat Henke at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-1, with Maack rolling past McDonagh, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot. Rounding out play for the day, Esker defeated Roth at the No. 4 position in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, while Gabby Phillips downed Graf, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot.
Head coach Chris Hoover was glad to start out conference play with a win.
"(Friday) wasn't a bad day of tennis," said Hoover. "We are glad we got the win, however, we didn't play great. We had a few solid matches, and Carolina and Sarah played some great doubles. It is always a good feeling to start out conference play with success."
Illinois State will continue their spring season as they travel to Milwaukee, Wisc., Sunday, April 3, to take on Marquette at 10 a.m., CDT.
