Illinois State Women's Tennis Defeated by No. 50 Tulane, 7-0

NEW ORLEANS-The Illinois State women's tennis team was shut out, 7-0 by No.50 Tulane on Tuesday, March 13, in New Orleans.

In doubles, The Green Wave seized an early lead when Tulane's Klara Vyskocilova and Ipek Birol defeated Emmie Marx and Sarah Paulson, 8-2 at No.1 doubles. Elma Levy and Hila Elster then defeated Stefanie Youngberg and Carolina Abello, 8-4 and gave Tulane the edge heading into singles play.

Singles began with a, 1-0 disadvantage for the Redbirds who soon found themselves down further when Elster quickly defeated Ilves, 6-2, 6-0 at No.5 singles. The Redbirds then were defeated in straight sets until only Phyllis Tigges and Birol remained playing at No.2 singles. Tigges had a chance to avoid the shutout for the Redbirds and put down Birol early, winning the first set, 6-3. However, Birol rallied and eventually defeated Tigges, 6-3,3-6,1-0(4) and ended the match at a score of, 7-0.

The loss for the Redbirds came after a big victory the day before on Monday, March, 12 against New Orleans. The Redbirds got behind early in that match, but were ultimately lifted past the Privateers by strong play from Marx and Abello at the No.1 and No.2 singles positions. Each player won their match in three sets and sealed the comeback victory, 4-3.

The Redbirds continue play this weekend against McNeese State on Thursday, March 14, wrapping up three consecutive days of competition in New Orleans. Play is set to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
