BLOOMINGTON, Ill.-The Illinois State Women's tennis team (5-5, 1-0 MVC) was defeated in a close match at home to the UIC Flames, 4-3 on Saturday, March 2, at the Evergreen Racquet Club.

"Today was a tough loss to a tough team, I really thought we had them on the ropes," head coach Chris Hoover said. "...But I am not unhappy with the loss. We are still getting back on track."

The competition marked the first home appearance for the Redbirds in two weeks. The last five matches for the team were on the road and took place in 3 cities across 2 states. The loss to the Flames also marks the first loss at home for the Redbirds this season who are now 3-1 at the Racquet Club this year

In doubles, the Redbirds battled hard against a relentless UIC team to earn an early point. At No.3 doubles, UIC jumped in front early when Natalia Kuvakina and Ann-Sophie Hahn of UIC quickly defeated Carolina Abello and Heather Nisbet. However, Illinois State struck back at No. 2 doubles when Stefanie Youngberg and Phyllis Tigges defeated Jana Knoppe and Kathryn Sharples of UIC, 8-6.

The point came down to the No.1 doubles match between Redbirds, Emmie Marx and Sarah Paulson and UIC's Haley Craig and Mariana Palacios. Marx and Paulson went on to win after a tie breaker, 8-7(7-4). Paulson, a freshman, stepped up to play as Marx's partner in the absence of Kadi Ilves. Ilves missed the last match against Lamar as well.

"Without Kadi (Ilves), we have been playing shorthanded," Hoover said. "But, I thought Sarah (Paulson) did a nice job filling in at No.1 doubles with Emmie (Marx)."

In singles, the Redbirds needed three wins to take the match, but were able to win only two. Each picking up a win today in single were Redbirds Marx and Tigges. At No.1 singles, Marx went up against UIC's Craig, and won in two sets, 6-3, 7-6(3). Tigges took on UIC's Sharples, winning in two sets as well, 6-3, 6-3.

"Emmie (Marx) did a nice job at singles, and so did Phyllis (Tigges)," Hoover said. "They worked hard to pick up quality wins today."

Next, the team heads back onto the road and prepares to play three matches in New Orleans on March 12, March 13, and March 14 against New Orleans, Tulane, and McNeese. The first match against New Orleans on Tuesday, March 12 is set to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
