Redbirds Return Home After Tough Matches In El Paso, Texas

EL PASO, Texas-The Illinois State Women's tennis team (5-4, 1-0 MVC) will return to Normal, Ill. after suffering tough losses to UTEP, 6-1 on Friday, Feb. 21 and Lamar, 5-2 on Saturday Feb. 22, in El Paso, Texas at the El Paso Tennis Club.

The matches were played outside marking the first outdoor competition for the Redbirds since play wrapped up in the fall. The conditions in El Paso, Texas during over proved to be out of character for the area and the weather was cold and windy.

"This weekend we faced several challenges," said Hoover. We had time changes, the wind, the glare of the sun, as well as cool temperatures. In general, this was a tough weekend for us but a valuable learning weekend as well. Hopefully we take from this the things we need to do to improve."

UTEP, Friday, Feb. 21

In doubles, the Redbirds split a pair of matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with Emmie Marx and Kadi Ilves dropping their match to Martina Trierweiler and Rebecca Calvillo, 8-3 and Carolina Abello and Heather Nisbet defeating Jamie-Leigh Michau and Anastasiya, 8-4. UTEP seized the team point with a win at No. 3 doubles when Phyllis Tigges and Stefanie Youngberg were defeated by Marie Leblonde and Gabi Vasquez, 8-4.

 

 

In singles the Redbirds jumped out to an early lead at No. 5 singles when Youngberg dominated Michau, 6-1, 6-0. Youngberg continues to show consistency and has won her last 4 consecutive singles matches.

However, the Miners struck back when Trierweiler defeated Tigges in a tough match, 6-3, 6-2. The Redbirds did not regain momentum and went on to drop the rest of the singles matches resulting in a final team score of, 6-1.

Lamar, Saturday, Feb. 22

In doubles, the Redbirds came out hard to take the match at the No. 1 position with Marx and Tigges able to pick up the win, 8-3 over Carolina Salas and Helene Czudek. However, momentum shifted and the match began to go wrong for the Redbirds in as Youngberg and Abello as well as H. Nisbit and Ashton Nisbet dropped their matches, yielding the point to the Cardinals.

In singles, the Redbirds were strong at the No.1 and No.2 position. At No. 1 singles, Marx battled in a long contest, finally beating Carolina Salas, 6-2, 4-6, 10-3. At No.2 singles, Abello defeated Alicia Port, 6-4, 6-3. But the Cardinals proved to have great depth, winning the remainder of the singles matches and edging out the Redbirds, 5-2.

"The match was much closer than the score reflects," said Hoover. "We were dealing with a line-up change too with Kadi (Ilves) getting sick on Friday."

Next up for the Redbirds Next, the Redbirds return home for a match against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Mar. 2. The match will be played at the Evergreen Racquet club with competition set to begin at 1 p.m. CT
