Redbirds Defeat Creighton in Conference Opener, 6-1

OMAHA, Neb.-The Illinois State Women's tennis team (5-2, 1-0 MVC) defeated Creighton (1-3, 0-1 MVC), Sunday, Feb. 17 in Omaha, Neb.

The win against Creighton marks the third straight match and the second win for the team this weekend. The Redbirds first traveled to Lincoln, Neb. on Friday to take on Nebraska and remained in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday to take on Colorado State.

The team lost a tough match to Nebraska, 6-1 but was able to bounce back Saturday to defeat Colorado State, 5-1. The match against Creighton on Sunday was the first conference competition for the Redbirds this season.

"I was happy to get pick up a conference win," said head coach Chris Hoover. "We played well enough to win today and we are getting closer to where we want to be. We definitely started out strong with our doubles. I was very pleased with the performances at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Emmie (Marx) also played a great match at No. 2 singles."

In doubles, the Redbirds continued to show consistency recording another sweep against the Jays to secure the point. First to finish were Kadi Ilves and Emmie Marx at No. 1 doubles, quickly defeating Anna Kirshenbaum and Sam Anderson, 8-2. Next to finish were Phyllis Tigges and Stefanie Youngberg at No. 2 doubles, commanding the victory over Jennie Hartjes and Karlin Naslund, 8-3 and securing the team point.



In singles action, momentum seemed to shift in favor of the Jays as Creighton's Hartjes defeated Tigges early in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1. However, Marx responded with an impressive performance at No. 2 singles, defeating Analese Snyder, 6-2, 6-2.

After suffering the loss at No. 2 singles, Creighton never regained momentum and did not win another singles match. The match concluded when Ilves defeated Kirshenbaum at No. 3 singles. Ilves was able to rebound after dropping the first set to Kirshenbaum and won in 3 sets, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
