Redbirds Defeat Colorado State, 5-2

LINCOLN, Neb.-The Illinois State Women's tennis team was able to bounce back after a loss Friday to defeat Colorado State, 5-2 on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Lincoln, Neb.
On Friday the team took on No. 15 Nebraska, losing the match, 6-1. Head Coach Chris Hoover was excited for the win today.
"This was a really great match, and it was well played," said Hoover. "Kadi (Ilves), Stefanie (Youngberg), Gabby (Phillips), and Emmie (Marx) all played well and had solid wins today in singles. In doubles, Emmie (Marx) and Kadi (Ilves) played very well also."
In doubles the Redbirds came out hard, with Ilves and Marx quickly defeating Kendall Heitzner and Kaley Schultz, 8-3. The win was a surge of momentum for the team, and they went on to sweep Colorado State in doubles, seizing the point.
In singles action, the momentum seemed to shift when Phyllis Tigges fell early to Natalie Heffron, 6-2, 6-2, but the Redbirds found a way to win. The team rallied and did not lose another singles match, ultimately securing the team victory.
In the win Ilves dominated Heitzner, 6-2, 6-1. Phillips bested Maddie Buxton in a close match, 6-2, 7-6. Finally,the match ended when Youngberg bested Adriana Wojakowska, 6-4, 7-6.
Next, the team will travel to Omaha, Neb. to take on Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton on Sunday, Feb. 17. Creighton currently holds a record of 0-2, having fallen to No. 17 Nebraska as well as Iowa. Play is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
