Kansas Defeats Illinois State, 5-2

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Aniko Kiss led the Illinois State women's tennis team (2-3) to a close loss against Kansas Sunday, 5-2. Kiss now holds an overall record of 12-2 in No. 1 singles.
Kiss held off opponent Monica Pezzotti in the No. 1 position after Kansas's second set comeback to clinch the point for the Redbirds, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. She, along with partner Ariane Maack, defeated Kansas's pairing of Pezzotti and Paulina Los in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5). Fellow Redbird Emmie Marx bested opponent Dylan Windom in the No. 3 singles position, 7-5, 6-3, to claim the other point for the Redbirds.
Gabby Phillips returned to play in the No. 5 position for the first time this semester, only to be defeated by opponent Claire Dreyer, 6-2, 6-3. Tigges fell to Los in a close two sets at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-4, and Carolina Abello lost to Maria Belen Ludueña in the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-3. Hannah Esker played in the No. 6 position and lost in an 8-match pro set since the meet was already decided, 9-8 (8-6).
The Redbirds return to play with another two-match weekend in Columbia, Miss., Feb. 17-18. The team faces Missouri at 5 p.m. (Friday) and Saint Louis at 1 p.m. (Saturday).
