BLOOMINGTON, Ill.-The Illinois State women's tennis team earned its second victory of the spring season defeating in state rival Eastern Illinois, 5-2 on Sunday, Feb. 3.

In singles action the Panthers initially seemed to have the Redbirds on their heels seizing both No. 1 and No. 2 singles victories. However, the teams depth helped give the Redbirds the edge.

"This was a good win for us," said head coach Chris Hoover. "I didn't expect to lose both No. 1 and No. 2 singles and still be able to win the match."

In spite of dropping both No.1 and No. 2 singles, the team did not concede another loss. In No. 3 singles, Phyllis Tigges defeated Merritt Whitley, 7-6, 6-3. In No. 4 singles Carolina Abello defeated Hannah Kimbrough, 6-3, 7-5. In No. 5 singles Stefanie Youngberg defeated Jennifer Kim, 6-3, 6-2. Finally, in No. 6 singles, Gabby Phillips defeated Kristen Laird in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

"Eastern played well and beat us at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but our depth is what makes our team tough," said Hoover.

"That depth really showed during the singles matches, and by the time we got to doubles, everyone was stepping up." In doubles the team proved to be dominant for the second match in a row winning both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, leaving No. 3 doubles unfinished.

In No. 1 doubles Emmie Marx and Kadi Ilves defeated Merritt Whitley and Janelle Prisner 8-2 while Tigges and Youngberg defeated Sephora Boulbahaiem 8-4 in No. 2 doubles.

Next, the Redbirds prepare to take on the IUPUI Jaguars for a third consecutive home match. The match will take place at Evergreen Racquet Club with play set to begin at 7 p.m. CT.
