Redbirds Defeat Butler, 7-1 In Home Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.-The Illinois State women's tennis team expanded its record to 1-1, defeating Butler, Friday, Feb. 1.

The Redbirds put their depth on display after sweeping doubles in two matches and winning five of six singles matches.

"This was a good start for us at home. I saw some good things take place tonight and all and all I am pleased," said Head Coach Chris Hoover. "We still have some room to improve but I think the student-athletes are ready to do the things that are needed to get better. We are looking forward to Eastern Illinois on Sunday."

In doubles, the Redbirds out-performed the Bulldogs, winning the first two matches which ended doubles play before the third match was concluded.

The first pair of Redbirds to win was Emmie Marx and Kadi Ilves who defeated Stephanie McLoughlin and Konstantina Adami, 8-2. Second to finish were Carolina Abello and Gabby Phillips who defeated Sienna Reuter and Clare Cornelius, 8-4.



The third match between Redbird pair Phyllis Tigges and Stefanie Youngberg and Caroline Hedrick and Brittany Farmer resulted unfinished. The team now holds an overall record of 25-22 in doubles play.

In singles, key performances helped lift the Redbirds who won all but one match. Stefanie Youngberg was strong defeating Sienna Reuter, 6-0, 6-0 in number No. 5 singles. Gabby Phillips also had a great match defeating Clare Cornelius, 6-0, 6-1 in No. 6 singles.

Next, the team prepares for a second home match this weekend and will compete against Eastern Illinois Sunday, Feb. 3. The match will take place at the Evergreen Racquet Club and is set to begin at 3 p.m. CT.
