NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomores Katherine Nelson and Wenting Zhang were named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week Nov. 13. This is the fourth time Zhang has received the title during the 2012-13 season.

After a successful dual meet against the Fighting Illini both Redbirds earned MVC Swimmer and Diver of the week. The Redbirds defeated the Illini 157-143 at Horton Pool. Nelson and Zhang won first-place in multiple events.

Zhang was named MVC Diver of the Week for the fourth time during the 2012-13 season after a successful night on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. On the 1-meter board she broke not only the Horton Pool record but also the school record with a score of 324.22. This score gave Zhang first-place in the event. On the 3-meter board Zhang earned a total of 312.01 points, which was another first-place finish.

"I am impressed with her consistency week after week, and she has had a great sophomore year at Illinois State," diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "Her two first place finishes helped us a lot in the meet against Illinois, and anytime a diver can help the team during a meet is what it is all about."

Nelson finished the dual meet with three first-place finishes. She started with a victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.22 and continued to swim past the opponents and touch the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.51. Both times were a season best. In the last event of the night, Nelson led off the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay. The time of 1:36.20 broke the Horton Pool record and secured the victory for the Redbirds.

"This is a well deserved honor. Katherine had a terrific dual meet against Illinois and the meet was an impressive display of her freestyle sprint ability. Leading up into this week, she has had a very consistent dual meet season thus far," head coach Steve Paska said. "She is an athlete that loves to sprint, and she is taking advantage of every opportunity to sprint to the best of her ability. She led off the 200-yard freestyle relay knowing that the meet was coming down to that last relay and she got off to a great start which allowed Erica Halley, Kristin Horney and Marissa Yontz to finish in pool recording setting fashion."

The Redbirds will return to the pool for the Zippy Invitational. The team will be competing Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 in Akron, Ohio. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more
