NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team is preparing for a weekend of competition against Truman State and conference opponent Northern Iowa. The Redbirds will be competing at Horton Pool at 6 p.m. on Friday against Truman State, and then travel to Northern Iowa on Saturday for a dual meet at 2 p.m.

This is the second weekend of a three weekend span of competition for the Redbirds. Head coach Steve Paska is looking forward to some competitive races both nights.

"On Friday night, Truman State will be a new opponent for us. They are a Division II school, and they have high finishes in the Division II ranking. It will be exciting to compete against a new team at Horton Pool," Paska said. "Home meets are always something we look forward to, and Truman State is a solid program so there will be a handful of close races."

The Redbirds competed last weekend against conference opponent Evansville. The Redbirds defeated Evansville and earned Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week. Sophomore Cecilia Holmes was named MVC Swimmer of the Week for the first time this season, and Wenting Zhang was named MVC Diver of the Week for the second time. The honor also went to Northern Iowa's Taylor Ostrowski and Bethany Hovland. The Redbirds are coming off a successful week, and Coach Paska is looking forward to the Redbirds swimming with consistency.

"Saturday we will be leaving early in the morning to travel to Northern Iowa. The Panthers are a good team, and they have had strong performances so far this season. It is a combination of competing Friday night and striving for the consistency to perform two days in a row," Paska said. "We have to stay focused for both meets. Other college teams do it, so I am interested to see how the team competes for the first time in a dual meet setting on consecutive days. We are ready to race Friday night and Saturday afternoon."

Friday night the diving team will be competing against each other before heading to Northern Iowa to dive against another strong team. Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann is excited to see how the student-athletes perform.

"Truman State not having a diving team will be a good way for us to have a tune-up before we head to Northern Iowa on Saturday. Friday night we will be competing in front of a home crowd which is always exciting," Hoffmann said. "As for Saturday, Northern Iowa has many new faces as well as some very talented divers, so we are excited to compete against them. After this weekend, we will have competed against three conference opponents before going to conference, which is always a good way to have started the season"
