Oct. 31, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State sophomores Cecilia Holmes and Wenting Zhang were named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer and Diver of the week for Oct. 30, after a dual meet against Evansville. This is the second time during the 2012-13 season Zhang has been given the honor. The meet was also the first dual meet of the Redbird's season.
Zhang was named diver of the week for a second time after a strong performance against conference opponent Evansville. She earned first-place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. On the 1-meter Zhang received a score of 289.80 and on the 3-meter a score of 299.83. Zhang also holds the record on the 1-meter board with a score of 307.50.
"Anytime you go against a conference opponent it adds to the meaning of the award. I think it was a pretty great week for her," head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "Both Wendy and Bethany Hovland from Northern Iowa had great weekends and both deserve the award of diver of the week. It will be exciting to see the two compete against one another this weekend."
Holmes was named MVC Swimmer of the Week. Holmes finished first in three events against Evansville. The Bloomington, Ill. native finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:35.14, the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.40, and the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:37.06. All three times were a season best. Holmes also anchored the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay.
"Cecilia earning valley swimmer of the week is a well deserved honor. She contributed significantly to our dual meet victory against Evansville. The three events in the dual meet that Cecilia finished first in were distance oriented the most vigorous events. She has a fantastic work ethic, and she expects to swim fast and wants to swim fast every time she has the opportunity. Knowing that Cecilia can compete in so many different events is a huge advantage for the Redbirds," head swimming coach Steve Paska said. She is competitive in every event she competes in. She is definitely one of the most competitive swimmers I have coached. In her year and a half here at Illinois State she has been a consistent in her dual meet performances, and I believe it is because of her tenacious work ethic.
Last season Holmes and Zhang were both named newcomer-of-the-year at the Redbirds annual award banquet.
The Redbirds will compete again Friday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. against Truman State at Horton Pool.
