Evansville, Ind. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team will be competing in its first conference dual meet of the 2012-13 season Saturday, Oct. 27, against Evansville. The meet will be held at the Purple Aces Wyttenbach Pool and is set to begin at 2 p.m.

Head swimming coach Steve Paska believes the student-athletes have been training hard since August, and he is looking forward to the first dual meet of the season.

"This first conference meet of the season is long overdue. We have had competitions but this being the first dual meet is coming at a very opportune time," Paska said. "The student-athletes have been training with consistency and persistence ever since school started in the end of August."

The Redbirds are coming off a third-place finish at the Dennis Stark Relays on Oct. 12 and also a Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week honor of sophomore Wenting Zhang on Oct. 17. This meet marks the first week of the Redbirds three week span of competition.

"I am looking forward to see how they rise to the challenge with their first competition against Evansville, who I believe are off to a terrific start. The Purple Aces have quality swimmers and divers, and I am looking forward to competing against a conference opponent. This Saturday afternoon there are going to be some close and competitive races," Paska said. "This will be the first dual meet on our journey of the 2012-13 season. We have had distance meets and relay meets but this first dual meet will play a significant role in how we move forward the next few weeks."

Diving coach Phil Hoffmann is excited for the first conference meet and to see the team improve each week of competition.

"It is always a challenge going on the road but this weekend being the first of three weeks of meets I think the student-athletes understand there is a process to everything we are doing," Hoffmann said. "We are going to give our best showing, but we will also be continuing to work on our goals and making improvements each week."
