CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -
Illinois State's swimming and diving team had an overwhelming victory against the Northern Iowa Panthers Friday night at the Glen F. Henry Pool. The final score between the two MVC rivals was Redbirds 194, Panthers 106.
Five of Illinois State's athletes had double-event victories which lead the `Birds to their first win on the road. Swimmers Amy Schaefer, Lindsay Dinkelman, Sarah Rendek, Jeanette Nolte and Katelyn Prorok were the Redbirds that accomplished the double-event first-place finishes.
Schaefer took the 100- and 200-yard freestyle, Dinkelman in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, Rendek with the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and Nolte snatched up both the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley (IM).
Head coach Steve Paska was impressed with the Redbirds' performance on the road.
"There were some really close and intense races tonight," Paska said. "Our swimmers showed a lot of resiliency in their races tonight and gave impressive performances that put the `Birds on top."
Prorok took the diving events with a final six-dive score of 261.98 on one-meter as well as on three-meter with a final of 258.00. Prorok nearly qualified on one-meter for the NCAA Zone C Regional Diving Meet, the qualifying score is 265.
Diving coach Phil Hoffmann felt the divers went into the meet with a positive outlook.
"Our divers went into this meet with great attitudes and confidence," Hoffmann said. "Prorok had a great showing on both `boards tonight, but UNI's two freshmen divers definitely had impressive performances as well."
The Redbirds will return to Horton Pool next weekend for the first time in three weeks to compete against Evansville and Iowa State. ISU's swimmers and divers are looking forward to hosting their first official home meet of the season. The Redbirds are scheduled to hit the water at 5 p.m. on Friday.
