South Bend, Ind. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team will be competing in the Dennis Stark Relays Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. The meet will be held at Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Ind. The event will consist of relay events in both swimming and diving.

The relays will be the start of the 2012-13 competitive season. The Redbirds will be competing against Notre Dame, Oakland University, Cleveland State and IUPUI. Head swimming coach Steve Paska is looking forward to the competition the team will be facing this weekend.

"We will be competing against four quality programs during the relays, and I believe the races will be extremely competitive," Paska said. "I am looking forward to see how the student-athletes rise to the challenge and compete against other teams."

The relays will consist of 10 different events that will showcase different swimmers. Friday will be the first sprint-oriented meet of the season for the Redbirds. Paska is looking forward to seeing the sprinters perform in multiple events.

"I think it's a terrific way to start the season because the meet consists of 10 different relays," Paska said. "This is more of a sprinter competition and I know the student-athletes look forward to the event each year. This meet will give us a good evaluation on where our sprinters are at this point in the season."

The divers will also be competing at the Dennis Stark Relays. Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann considers this the start of the 2012-13 season and is looking forward to the competition.

"I feel the season officially starts at the relay event," Hoffmann said. "We will be competing against divers from different programs that are very talented. The student-athletes are going into this meet with a great mindset, and I believe will compete to the best of their ability."

The diving events are set up in a relay form also. Two divers will compete in six dives each on the 1-meter board and earn a combined score. The 3-meter board will be a synchronized event for the divers.
