CARBONDALE, Ill. - Illinois State swimming and diving finished its weekend of distance meets Saturday, Sept. 22 at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. The meet ended with swimmers competing in a 5K open water race.

Head coach Steve Paska was pleased with how the student-athletes performed in the open water.

"This is a difficult meet because it is a different setting. The swimmers are swimming outside in uncontrolled conditions, but I am happy with how the student-athletes performed in a different swimming environment than what they are used too," Paska said. "We are headed in the right direction, and I am very impressed with the student-athletes performances. Overall, this was an outstanding team effort"

Senior Danielle Schumacher led the way for the Redbirds in the open water race with a third-place finish (1:04:01.00). Following Schumacher in fourth-place was sophomore Valerie Jones (1:05:45.00). Senior Jeanette Nolte received a fifth-place finish (1:09:39.00) and in sixth freshmen Tara Gidaszewski (1:11:51.00)

The Redbirds will compete again on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Horton Pool for the annual Red-White Intrasquad Meet at 9 a.m
