NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team hosted its first alumni meet Saturday afternoon at Horton Pool. Over 100 swimmers and divers were in attendance including more than 80 alumni.
There were 12 events at the meet comprising of relays, diving and individual races. Both alumni and current swimmers and divers joined together to form teams. There were also some events between alumni and current swimmers and divers to compete against each other.
This event touched many people and helped to nurture continued growth between current and previous swimmers and divers. Head coach, Steve Paska has always wanted to have an event like this, and this was the year.
"Having an alumni weekend has been thought about for years," Paska said. "The planning began a year ago with the help of our diving coach Phil, several alumni and me. This experience gave me a very special feeling to be surrounded by 29 of my current swimmers and divers and over 80 members from my previous teams. It has brought back fond memories that I will never forget. I especially appreciate all of the help and support I receive from my staff, Illinois State Athletics and Illinois State University during this event."
The weekend started with a dinner at the Alumni Center. All alumni were invited and they enjoyed food, silent auction information and a picture slideshow of Illinois State swimming diving over the years. Alumni like Adrienne Cirrincione could not be happier to come back and see her alma mater and team.
"Ever since I received the invitation in the mail I have been looking forward to the alumni meet. I haven't seen any of my teammates in over 20 years, and several alumni even flew in from out-of-state to be at the event to see everyone," Cirrincione said. "I love coming back and seeing the campus. It has changed so much and events like this allow for us to reminisce and see all of the wonderful changes being made to the campus."
Cirrincione went on to say many of the alumni hope to have more events like this in the future where they will be able to reconnect.
