Redbirds Finish First Day of Competition at Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team competed in its first meet of the season at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. The redbird swimmers competed in two events the 1650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard IM, and the divers competed in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dive.
At the Saluki Miler, sophomore Cecilia Holmes earned a second-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:45.29) and a first-place finish in the 400-yard IM (4:37.43). In the 1650-yard freestyle, sophomore Valerie Jones earned third-place (17:46.64). Senior Jeanette Nolte earned a fourth-place finish (18:08.51) followed by senior Danielle Schumacher in sixth-place (18:14.75). Redbird newcomer Tara Gidaszewski earned eighth-place as well as a personal best in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:27.06).
Head swimming coach Steve Paska is pleased with how the student-athletes performed in both events.
"This meet is a great way to evaluate where we are this early in the season. I am extremely pleased with how we performed in both the 1650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard IM," Paska said. Three of the four swimmers who competed in the 1650-yard freestyle also competed in the 400-yard IM. Holmes finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle and winning first-place in the 400-yard IM was a solid performance. She has been training hard this season and that showed today."
In the 400-yard IM, Redbird newcomer Courtney Taylor earned third-place ( 4:41.82). Nolte received fourth-place (4:42.04) and Jones followed by in sixth-place (4:45.43).
"Overall we had a solid performance and the enthusiasm for the first meet of the year was outstanding," Paska said. "I am very pleased with the performance and now we need to get ready for the 5K Open Water Race. We will be seeing mental toughness as the swimmers compete, and I am looking forward to it."
The Redbird divers also competed at Southern Illinois. Sophomore diver Wenting Zhang earned a first-place finish in both the 1-meter (285) and 3-meter board (313).
Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann is very pleased in how the divers competed.
"As a whole all the divers did a great job. The first meet is always hard, and I was happy with the effort they put forth. Seniors Maureen Doyle and Madicyn Prouty led the team well and showed great guidance and leadership," Hoffmann said. "It was a great meet for us and to open the season against conference competitors was outstanding. I am looking forward to the next meets."
The Redbirds will compete again Saturday, Oct. 6, for the annual Red-White Intrasquad meeting beginning at 9 a.m. at Horton Pool.
