Sept. 19, 2012

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team will begin its season for the fourth time at Southern Illinois this weekend. The team will compete in two events starting Friday with the Saluki Miler and concluding Saturday with the 5K Open Water race.

The Redbirds will send 13 swimmers on Friday to compete in the Saluki Miler at 6 p.m. at the Recreation Center Pool in Carbondale, Ill. On Saturday morning, the team will travel to Little Grassy Lake in Makanda, Ill. to compete in the 5K Open Water race at 10 a.m. Four of the 13 swimmers competing this weekend are freshmen, while the remaining nine are returning swimmers.

Illinois State head swimming and diving coach Steve Paska is excited to see where the student-athletes are at this point in the season.

"This is our first competition of the season and this will be a good way to evaluate where the student-athletes are this early in the season. The student-athletes that will be representing Illinois State this weekend will rise to the challenge and overcome obstacles while competing in both the Saluki Miler and the 5K Open Water race," Paska said. "I am really looking forward to how this group starts the 2012-13 season. We have been training hard on a daily basis, and I love the passion and work ethic of the team."

The Illinois State diving team will also be competing this weekend at the Saluki Miler. The Redbirds will be sending seven divers to the competition. The divers will be competing on Friday night.

Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann is also excited to see the divers compete for the first time this season.

"This is a great opportunity for the divers to be able to compete this early in the season," said Hoffmann. "I am looking forward to this competition, and I am looking forward to seeing our student-athletes perform."
