Aug 27, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team is back to contend with the country's top teams during the 2013-14 season. Head coach Steve Paska announced the Redbirds' 2013-14 schedule today. This season the Redbirds will compete in four invitationals and host three meets, including two conference match ups.
"The coaching staff is excited about this schedule. It is almost a carbon copy of last year's, with the exception that the Redbirds will be on the road for the first five contests," Paska said. "I'm looking forward to witnessing this group of swimmers and divers come together to strive for excellence in the classroom and compete against the quality programs on our schedule."
The Redbirds will begin their season on Sept. 21, at home with the Alumni Meet, which will be held at Horton Pool. Next, ISU will take its first road trip to Southern Illinois where the team will compete in the Saluki Miller and Open Water 5K (Sept. 27-28). From there the Redbirds will come home for the Red/White Intrasquad Meet (Oct. 5) during homecoming weekend.
The next week, ISU will head to Notre Dame to participate in the Norte Dame Relays (Oct. 11) at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Redbirds will be on the road for the next three meets, traveling to Truman State (Oct.18) Nebraska (Oct. 26) and finally, to Illinois. The Redbirds will be home for their next meet against conference rival, Evansville (Nov.8).
ISU will make its way to the Zippy Invitational (Dec. 6-8) at the Akron in before heading to Puerto Rico. The Redbirds will go head-to-head over winter break at the Copa Coqui invitational in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
They will come back from break reenergized and ready to finish out the season with two home meets against conference competitor Northern Iowa (Jan. 11) and Washington (Jan.18). ISU will finish off its regular season on the road, first stopping at Illinois Chicago (Jan. 25), before traveling to Bulter for the Butler Invitational (Jan. 26).
Next Illinois State will compete at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship meet (Feb. 13-15) hosted by Southern Illinois at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium. With the season less than a month away, Paska is already excited for the conference meet this year.
"The last five years we have taken second place at the MVC's, and I'm looking forward to seeing this year's squad rise to the challenge, as we move closer to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference," Paska said.
ISU will take a four week break after the MVC meet to prepare for postseason play. The NCAA Diving Regionals (Mar. 13-15) will be held in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, and the NCAA Championships (Mar. 20-22) will take place at Minnesota's aquatic center in Minneapolis, Minn.
