Holmes Given MVC Leadership & Service Award

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Illinois State sophomore swimmer Cecilia Holmes was chosen as one of the 10 student-athletes honored with the Missouri Valley Conference Leadership & Service Award for the 2012-13 winter season.
The MVC Leadership & Service Award honors the achievements of exceptional student-athletes. The Valley will be recognizing 10 student-athletes three times a year (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. In order to be eligible for the MVC Leadership & Service Award the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, demonstrate good citizenship through sportsmanship and community service and must participate in a sport during the season of recognition.
This season Holmes received 2013 MVC First-Team All Conference honors for the Redbirds, after being a part of the first-place 800-yard freestyle relay team (7:28.04) at the MVC Swimming & Diving Championships in February. The relay team set a new MVC Championship, Shea Natatorium and ISU record. Holmes also was named MVC Swimmer of the Week (Oct. 30) once this season after earning three first-place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:35.14), 500-yard freestyle (5:09.40) and 400-yard IM (4:37.06) in a meet against Evansville.
Along with success in the pool, Holmes has excelled in the classroom and the community. The Bloomington, Ill. native holds a 3.10 cumulative grade point average, has been named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar-Athlete Team and has been on the honor roll twice during her career as a Redbird. Holmes is a 2012-13 SAAC Representative and participated in SAAC Trick or Treat. Holmes also participated in the Diversity Advocacy Kick Off, Taste of Redbirds, Hudson Family Reading Night, Reggie Fun Zone and Recess Buddies. The swimmer is also a member of Habitat for Humanity and has helped with the Special Olympics.
