NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomore diver Wenting Zhang was named Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week Jan. 29 after competing at the UIC Diving Invitational and the Butler Invitational. This is the eighth time Zhang has earned the title of MVC Diver of the Week this season.

"I think earning this title eight times in one season is a culmination of a great dual meet season. I think Wenting is very deserving of this award, and it is just a step along the way for her. She is looking very strong, and we are looking forward to getting her to peak at the right moment for the conference championship meet," diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "This year will be a tough battle at the championship. I think our conference is going to be one of the strongest years we have had since I have been coaching at Illinois State."

On Saturday, Jan. 26, Zhang competed at the UIC Diving Invitational at Illinois-Chicago. At this invite, Zhang took first-place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter board. On the 1-meter board Zhang received a score of 319.80. This score broke the Flames Natatorium record that was previously held by Olympian Nancilea Underwood. On the 3-meter board Zhang continued to break records with a score of 351.15. Her score broke the Illinois State record of 341.70, which was previously held by the diver herself.

On Sunday, Jan. 27, Zhang traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the Butler Invitational. Zhang earned two more first-place finishes on the 1-meter and 3-meter board. She earned a score of 316.75 on the 1-meter and a score of 342.20 on the 3-meter board.

Zhang currently holds the Illinois State record on the 1-meter (331.35) and the 3-meter board (351.15). She also holds the Horton Pool record on 1-meter (331.35) and 3-meter board (315.15).

The Redbirds will compete again on Feb. 14-16 at the MVC Conference Championship in Carbondale, Ill.
