NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomore diver Wenting Zhang was named Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the week for the seventh time during the 2012-13 season. Zhang earned the title after a weekend of first-place finishes against Washington (Mo.) and Ball State, as well as breaking the Millstone Pool records on the 1-meter and 3-meter board in St. Louis, Mo. and the Illinois State record on the 3-meter board.

Zhang first competed against Washington (Mo.) Saturday, Jan. 19, finishing first on the 1-meter board (295.20) and 3-meter board (341.70). Her scores on both boards broke the Millstone Pool records that were set in 1998. Zhang also broke the previous Illinois State 3-meter record of 330.05, which the diver previously held.

She continued to have a successful performance on Monday, Jan. 21, when the Redbirds competed at Ball State. Zhang's score on the 1-meter (301.42) and 3-meter board (332.70) gave her two more first-place finishes.

"Earning the honor of MVC Diver of the week I think is different each week depending on a diver's performance and what teams have competition," diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "Anytime you break a school record is great, but it is also nice to put Illinois State's mark and her own individual mark on another pool. This was a great weekend for her, and she is setting herself up to perform well in February at the conference championships and in March at the NCAA Diving Regionals."

The diver currently holds the Illinois State record on the 1-meter board (331.35) and the 3-meter board (341.70). She also holds the Horton Pool record on the 1-meter board (331.35) and the 3-meter board (315.15).

Zhang will compete again this weekend at the UIC Diving Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m. and on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Butler Invitational at 11 a.m.
