Redbirds Host Nebraska-Omaha for Senior Day
Jan. 10, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State swimming and diving will compete in a dual meet this Saturday against Nebraska-Omaha at Horton Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will be the last home meet, as well as Senior Day for the Redbirds.
The Redbirds are returning from their winter training trip in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In San Juan, the team competed in the Copa Coqui Invitational and earned a fifth-place finish.
On Saturday, 11 senior student-athletes will be recognized for their accomplishments in the pool and classroom.
"We are honoring 11 senior student-athletes who have played a huge role in the success of the swimming and diving program. They have succeeded both in the pool and the classroom," head coach Steve Paska said. "A number of the seniors have recorded personal bests and a number of them hold school records. I believe in my 28 years of coaching at Illinois State this senior class truly exemplifies the term student-athlete. This is a class I have thoroughly enjoyed watching mature and improve."
There will be nine swimmers and two divers honored on Saturday: Tori Alland, Morgan Buechele, Maureen Doyle, Kelly Healy, Jeanette Nolte, Madicyn Prouty, Sarah Rendek, Danielle Schumacher, Brianna Winkler and Arica Woolbright.
This dual meet will be the first dual meet since the Redbirds defeated Illinois in November. Paska is excited for the meet and believes the races will be competitive.
"Nebraska-Omaha has a talented group of swimmers, and I believe they will be ready to race but so will we. This is the last home meet of the 2012-13 campaign, and I am looking forward to see how the team competes," Paska said. "The student-athletes are ready for competitive races and they are ready to step-up and race against Nebraska Omaha. In the next 15 days, we have four meets and the main objective is racing consistently. This stretch is important to our training as well as strategy going into the Missouri Valley Conference Championship."
Doyle and Prouty will be the two senior divers competing for the last time at Horton Pool.
"The meet is a great way to get ready for the back half of our season and also to honor Maureen and Madicyn. They have both been great competitors for the last four years. This meet is about our two seniors competing for the last time at Horton Pool," diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "It is bittersweet but it is the beginning of the road to conference and that is where their leadership is taking us. I look forward to how they will compete on Saturday."
