Redbirds Kick-Off the Weekend in Fourth Place

After the first full day of competition at the Summa Care Invitational in Akron, Ohio the Illinois State swimming and diving team finished in fourth place.

Kyle Pullman, Valerie Zaleski, Tiffany Rentner and Katie Borkovec placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in tonight's final meet with a time of 1:37.83. Borkovec also finished 11th in the 50-yard freestyle with a season best time of 24.53.

"Today was a great day," said head coach Steve Paska. "Although things didn't go according to plan we are still right in the mix of competing for the invitational title."

Leading the Redbirds in individual events was Becky Layman who finished the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.95 in fourth-place. Also in the 200-yard individual medley Catharine Danenhower tied for ninth-place with a time of 2:10.21, her personal best. Erin Woodruff and Caitlin Mattingly also swam their season best in the 200-yard individual medley. In the 500-yard freestyle Jamie Haseman placed fifth with a personal best time of 5:08.31. Christi Steinbach finished the 500-yard freestyle with a season best time of 5:09.21 for 13th place. Right behind her was Jenny Klicka with a season best time of 5:09.27 in 14th place.



"We have a lot to be proud of," said Paska. "We can only improve on the intangibles and if we do that we will be competitive tomorrow."

Katie Janonis led the way for the Redbird divers and finished in sixth. Katelyn Prorok, Katie Zaumseil, Liza Perrino, Liz Herner and Annette Danilowski all finished in the top 20 during preliminaries.

Two full days of competition remain. Tomorrow's preliminary round will kick-off at 9 a.m., followed by the final round that will begin at 6 p.m.
