Redbirds Swimmers Defeat Illinois at Home 157-143

NORMAL, Ill-The Illinois State women's swimming and diving team picked up a big win Friday, defeating the Illini 157-143 at Horton pool.
Katherine Nelson, Erica Halley, Kristin Horney and Marissa Yontz delivered a first place finish in the last event, securing a victory for the Redbirds, as well as setting a new pool record at a time of 1:36.20 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
"All week we have been emphasizing the opportunity to race one more weekend and to compete to the best of our abilities," head coach Steve Paska said. "Illinois is a very strong team and we knew we had to come out on top in the last relay to win the meet. Our team came through with flying colors."
Thanks to an outstanding team effort, the Redbirds were able to move past the Ilini. Illinois State dominated in the 100-yard butterfly as well as the 200-yard breaststroke, with Redbirds taking first, second and third place in both events.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Alexis Nash swam a personal best at 57.98 seconds. Nash swam for a season best in two other events as well, finishing at 1:00.51 in the 100-yard backstroke and at 2:11.30 in the 200-yard backstroke.
In short distance, Katherine Nelson was a double winner, taking first place in both the 50-yard free style and the 100-yard free style. In long distance, Cecilia Holmes was a double winner as well, taking first place in both the 1000-yard freestyle as well as the 500-yard free style. Holmes finished the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:25.53, topping the second place finisher, Allyssa Toland of Illinois, by nearly 11 seconds.
The Redbird divers also played a crucial role in Illinois State's victory over Illinois, as Wenting Zhang took first place in both the one and three meter diving events.
Illinois State will resume competition at the Zippy Invitational after the Thanksgiving holiday. The competition begins November 30 in Akron, Ohio and will continue through December 2, 2012.
