South Bend, Ind. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team finished in fourth-place at the Dennis Stark Relays in South Bend, Ind., Friday evening.
The Redbirds earned 138 points finishing ahead of IUPUI, while falling to Notre Dame, Oakland State and Cleveland State. Head swimming coach Steve Paska believes this was a solid meet for the team.
"Overall this was a solid meet for the Redbirds," Paska said. "We had some impressive relay splits for this early in the season."
The Redbirds had a strong start to the meet as sophomore Katherine Nelson, junior Erica Halley, sophomore Kristin Horney and sophomore newcomer Marissa Yontz finished in second-place during the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.11. As the meet continued, senior Morgan Buechele, junior April Livingston and freshman Courtney Taylor finished second in the 300-yard breaststroke relay with a time of 3:21.39. Also, Nelson, Halley, sophomore Cecilia Holmes and Yontz finished in second-place during the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:33.87.
Redbird divers also competed in the relays. Sophomore Wenting Zhang broke her school record on the 1-meter board with a score of 307.50. Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann believes that the Dennis Stark Relays were a good start for the season.
"I thought it was a great event for the student-athletes. We held together very well as a team," Hoffmann said. "Wenting had a great event on the 1-meter board and all 7 divers have positives to build on as the season continues. "
The Redbirds will continue competition in Evansville, Ind., on Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. in a dual-meet against conference rival Evansville.
