White Team Defeats Red Team in Intrasquad Meet
Oct. 6, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team competed in their first home meet of the season on Oct. 6, at 9 a.m. The Redbirds were divided into two teams, the red and white team, where they competed against each other. The white team defeated the red team with a score of 211-145.
Head coach Steve Paska was very excited about the outcome of today's event.
"We did a great job today. This meet was competitive and we added more sprint events because we have a relay event next weekend at Notre Dame," Paska said. "This meet gave Sarah Dunleavy and I an evaluation tool on who is swimming fast right now. We are very impressed with the performances, but we do need to prepare a little bit better. This meet was a great team effort."
Many student-athletes earned first-place in multiple events sophomore Cecilia Holmes placed first in both the 800-yard freestyle (8:27.09) and the 200-yard IM (2:12.29). Sophomore Samantha Schuckles earned first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (59.215), 150-yard backstroke (1:34.78) and 50-yard backstroke (28.00). Sophomore newcomer Marissa Yontz received first-place in the 150-yard freestyle (1:24.62), 50-yard freestyle (25.04) and 50-yard fly (26.48). Senior Jeanette Nolte also took first-place finishes in both the 150-yard fly (1:32.63) and 100-yard freestyle (54.51)
Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann is also very pleased with how the first home meet of the season went.
"This was a good first home meet for us. Just like every competition we have things we can improve on, but I liked the student-athletes attitudes," Hoffmann said. "We have a long stretch of meets, and I believe each one is a stepping stone building block. We are at a good spot, and I feel that we are a lot further along this year than we were last year. I look forward to competing next week at the Dennis Stark Relays."
All seven divers competed in both the 3-meter and 1-meter dive. Sophomore Wenting Zhang received first place in both the 3-meter (297.38) and 1-meter (273.15) dive. Following Zhang in the 3-meter dive was senior Madicyn Prouty (238.50) and in second-place in the 1-meter dive was Redbird newcomer Kaitlyn Neiheisel (238.04).
The Redbirds will compete again Friday, Oct. 12 at the Dennis Stark Relays at Notre Dame. The relays will begin at 4 p.m.
