Redbird Swimming Goes the Distance
Sept. 28, 2013
CARBONDALE, Ill. - - Illinois State swimming finished its weekend of distance meets Saturday at Little Grassy Lake in Makanda, Ill. The weekend ended with swimmers competing in the 5K open-water race.
Leading the way for the Redbirds, freshman Claire Haggerty earned a third-place finish in the 5K (1:12:43) followed by Valerie Jones in fourth-place (1:12:46) and Madeline Farrell in sixth-place (1:13:48).
Head coach, Steve Paksa is proud of how well the Redbirds competed this weekend and is ready for the team to get back in the pool to continue improving.
"This meet gave the Redbirds the opportunity to race in a different environment," Paska said. "It is can be a difficult meet for swimmers because there is no way to train in the pool for it. There isn`t even a warm up for the swimmers. They just have to hop in and go, but I am very impressed with our team, the newcomers especially. Monday morning we will start training to consistently prepare for different types of meets as the fall semester rolls on."
Rounding off the pack was junior Keely Hunt who earned seventh-place (1:13:49.). Following Hunt in eighth-place was junior Tara Gidaszewski (1:15:26). Senior Erica Halley received a ninth-place finish (1:15.30) and in tenth-place was senior April Livingston (1:15.41). Right behind Halley and Livingston was freshman Rachel Root who placed eleventh (1:15:44) and sophomore Katelyn Kresal who earned twelfth (1:15:51).
The Redbirds will compete again on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Horton Pool for the annual Red-White Intrasquad Meet at 9:30 a.m.
