Zhang Finishes First Day at NCAA Diving Regionals
March 14, 2013
West Lafayette, Ind. - Sophomore diver Wenting Zhang finished her first day of competition at the NCAA Diving Zone Regionals Thursday at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind., competing on the 3-meter board.
Zhang qualified for the finals on the 3-meter board with a score of 293.85. In the finals, Zhang finished in seventh-place with a score of 311.60.
"It was fantastic for her to finish seventh on the 3-meter board. Wenting making the top 18 and going into the finals is an accomplishment but placing that high is something to be proud of," diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "She dove well today, and I am proud of how she is representing Illinois State. She opened a lot of eyes today with her performance. Her work ethic is great and she is showing a high level of skill so far this weekend."
The Chinese native currently holds the Illinois State and Horton Pool record on the 3-meter and 1-meter board. She was named Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Year and is coming off a conference title on the 1-meter board.
"Tomorrow will be a stronger day of competition, and Wenting will be ready to compete," Hoffmann said. "Her 1-meter list is stronger than her 3-meter list, which gives her a great set up for tomorrow."
Zhang will continue to compete tomorrow on the 1-meter board. The competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.. Live results for the competition can be found at www.divemeets.com.
