MUNCIE, Ind. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team lost to Ball State Monday afternoon in Muncie, Ind. with a final score of 173-127.

"This was our first loss of the year. We traveled all weekend and today we did improve our racing strategies and paid more attention to detail," head coach Steve Paska said. "After the meet against Washington (Mo.) I believe we made the improvements and changes we needed to and now we are just one step closer to the conference championship."

In the 1000-yard freestyle the Redbirds took the top two spots. Sophomore Cecilia Holmes finished in first-place with a time of 10:40.21 and sophomore Valerie Jones followed behind her in second with a time of 10:51.67.

Holmes continued to put up points for the Redbirds in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM. She touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.44. In the 200-yard IM she took second-place with a time of 2:10.82.

Senior Jeanette Nolte also had two first-place finishes. She finished with a time of 57.71 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:07.49 in the 200-yard butterfly.

"Cecilia and Jeanette have been training with consistency and had solid performances for us today. Both swimmers are strong racers, and I believe they are very dependable," Paska said. "During the 200-yard butterfly, Jeanette came from behind and won the race for us. Their victories helped contribute to the Redbirds performance today."

In diving, sophomore Wenting Zhang took first-place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter board. Zhang recorded a score of 332.62 on the 3-meter board and 301.42 on the 1-meter board. Senior Madicyn Prouty fell short of second-place by one point on the 1-meter board. Her score of 240.75 gave her a third-place finish.

"Wenting had a solid performance today. On Saturday against Washington (Mo.) she had a record setting day but today she was much more consistent," diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "Overall the student-athletes performed well. I believe we are at full strength, and I am looking forward to the UIC Diving Invitational."

The Redbirds will compete again next weekend on Saturday, Jan. 26, at UIC for the UIC diving Invitational and on Sunday, Jan. 27, in Fishers, Ind. for the Butler Invitational.
