SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Illinois State swimming team has been working out and practicing in Puerto Rico during its winter break and they capped off their trip with a fifth-place finish at the 10-team Copa Coqui Invitational in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Senior Jeanette Nolte started putting up points for the Redbirds, with a third-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly when she swam a time of 1:07.33. Junior April Livingston earned a second-place finish with a time of 1:19.14 in the 100-meter breaststroke, and sophomore Cecilia Holmes finished in third-place during the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:32.73 to highlight early individual performances.

"The invitational needed a lot of team cooperation and it was a beautiful day for a meet," head coach Steve Paska said. "We need to become reaccumulated to racing again. We had our meet in early December at Akron that we trained for, and we had a practice meet against Vanderbilt before the Copa Coqui Invitational. I think that it is important to regain the edge of what it feels like to compete again, as we move forward to finish our season before we head to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in the middle of February."

In the last event of the invitational, the Redbirds 10x50-meter freestyle relay team, which consisted of Danielle Schumacher, Tori Alland, Samantha Schuckles, Marissa Yontz, Kristin Horney, Katherine Nelson, Nolte, Erica Halley, Courtney Taylor and Holmes finished in first-place with a time of 4:45.85.

"The 10x50-meter freestyle was a great way for us to end the invitational, and I am very impressed with the student-athletes. Overall, this was a great meet, and I am happy we had the opportunity to race again. It will only help us prepare for our next competition," Paska said.

The Redbirds conclude their winter trip in Puerto Rico on Jan. 8. They will return to Horton Pool for competition on Saturday, Jan. 12, for the Senior Day dual against Nebraska-Omaha. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
