Redbirds Garner 12 NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete Selections

Oct. 7, 2013

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A total of 12 current and former Illinois State softball players have been selected as National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athletes, as announced by the association, Monday afternoon. Taylor Baxter, Sara Bradley, Molly Cull, Brittny Drish, Nichelle Harrison, Kolby Hoffman and Regan Romshek are the current Redbirds to earn the distinction, while former ISU players Liz Andrews, Elizabeth Kay, Lauren Kellar, Shelby Music and Erin Rodriguez are also honorees.

The award is bestowed upon any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average (GPA) or higher during the 2012-13 academic year. Four of the players (Baxter, Cull, Kay and Kellar) achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, while Harrison (3.91) and Drish (3.82) achieved better than a 3.8.

Overall, the 12 selections are the most of any Missouri Valley Conference team, an accomplishment that head coach Melinda Fischer is extremely proud of.

"We ask a lot of our players both on and off the field, and especially with our travel season in the spring, it's just a tremendous honor for them," Fischer said. "Being successful both academically and athletically is tough. At this level, to have that ability to balance the rigors of competition, travel and practice, along with the demands of the classroom is really something very special."

As a team, the Redbirds posted a 3.377 cumulative GPA during the 2012-13 academic year, the 33rd-best nationally.

"Our team's academic success wouldn't be possible without help from the staff at the Karin L. Bone Athletics Study Center and ISU faculty," Fischer added. "The guidance and resources they both provide are extremely beneficial to our student-athletes, particularly during our travel season."

Having recently completed their fall schedule, the Redbirds will officially begin the 2014 season in February.
