NORMAL, Ill. - After defeating a team of Redbird softball alumnae, 9-5, Sept. 28 in the annual Illinois State softball alumnae game, the Redbird softball team will conclude the competitive portion of its fall exhibition season Saturday when it travels to Evanston, Ill., for the Northwestern Tournament. Illinois State will take on Illinois-Chicago at noon, followed by a 2 p.m. matchup against tournament host Northwestern.

ISU has some familiarity with both teams in the tournament already this fall. The Redbirds lost to UIC, 7-4, in 11 innings in the opening game of the State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship Sept. 20. Northwestern, a 2007 participant in the Women's College World Series (WCWS), finished runner-up at the same tournament after it lost, 12-3, to fellow 2007 WCWS participant DePaul.

Illinois State is 3-3-1 during its fall exhibition season.

The Redbirds are coming off a 28-20 spring season in which they failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. ISU returns 16 players from its 2008 squad, including seven of its eight position starters, its top pitcher (senior Amber Smith) and its starting designated player (sophomore Abby Olson).

ISU will open its spring 2009 season Feb. 6-8, when it participates in the South Florida Tournament in Tampa.
