Redbird Softball Mourns the Loss of Linda Wendt Curless

Sept. 27, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball program is mourning the loss of former player Linda Wendt Curless, who passed away on Thursday, September 26 after a battle with breast cancer. She was 46.

Wendt played for the Redbirds and head coach Melinda Fischer from 1985-88. A hard-throwing right-handed pitcher, Wendt holds the program's single-season ERA record, after posting a 0.29 mark in 1986. She also ranks fifth all-time with a 0.97 career ERA. Wendt tossed a no-hitter on March 10, 1987 against Oklahoma State.

"Linda was a fierce competitor. She had great velocity and was what I would call effectively wild," Fischer fondly recalled. "She kept the batters off balance with the combination of her riseball and change up. Her 0.29 ERA is a record that has stood for 27 years, and I really don't think anyone will come close to breaking it. She was a very hard worker, a great teammate and a player who thoroughly enjoyed the sport. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her daughter Morgan, her husband Jack, and her brother David.
