ISU Ready to Conclude Fall Season with DH at Wisconsin

Sept. 27, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball team will conclude its eight-game fall schedule with a doubleheader at Wisconsin, Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m.

The Redbirds are coming off a 3-1 performance at the Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship (ICSC) in Normal last weekend. ISU defeated Valparaiso, Heartland and Ball State, and fell to Olivet Nazarene. While head coach Melinda Fischer was pleased with her squad's three victories, how the team and individuals continue to evolve is her main point of emphasis at this point in the fall season.

"The thing that we learned the most was the versatility within our team at this point," Fischer said of last weekend's games. "Not necessarily in a pinch-hit or relief role, but the versatility that we have or need to figure out in a couple of positions."

The Badgers are coming off their first-ever Big Ten Tournament title last season, and finished the season with a school-record 44 wins.

"This will be a great test," Fischer said. "They are a team that will test a lot of our abilities. I think they like to run a lot, and that is something that we've been kind of working on in terms of defending, but I think we will be tested very much this weekend.

"Seeing our pitching staff against Big Ten hitters will be interesting," Fischer continued. "I thought we did fairly well against Notre Dame (in a scrimmage Sept. 15), but now teams are a little more into their practices, and development has come along. We think we've done that in the circle, and we'll see what we are capable of doing against a very strong team."

Illinois State leads the all-time series with the Badgers, 3-2. The two teams most recently met in 2004, when Wisconsin defeated the Redbirds twice, 2-1 on Feb. 21 and 8-0 on Feb. 22.
