Redbirds, 11 Others to Compete in Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball team will continue its fall schedule this coming weekend, as it co-hosts the fifth-annual State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30 at Champion Fields in Normal. The Redbirds will be one of 12 teams from the state of Illinois competing in the event that is also put on by the Bloomington-Normal Area Sports Commission and the Town of Normal Parks and Recreation.

"We are excited about the fifth anniversary of this tournament, and are excited to have a couple new teams participating this year," Sports Marketing Manager of the Bloomington-Normal Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tournament Director Matt Hawkins said. "We expect competitive games and beautiful weather. We hope the sports fans in Bloomington-Normal come out to support this local event."

The Redbirds will be joined by Bradley, Eastern Illinois, DePaul, Illinois Central, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois Springfield, Lake Land, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Southern Illinois Edwardsville and Western Illinois.

The first day of actions contains pool play, with games being played at noon, 2:30 p.m., and 5 p.m., on four different fields. Pool One consists of DePaul, Lake Land and Western Illinois. Pool Two contains the Redbirds, Illinois Springfield and SIUE. Illinois Central, Northern Illinois, and Sothern Illinois will play in Pool Three, while Bradley, Eastern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago round out the competition in Pool Four.



Following pool play, the teams will be seeded into brackets for Sunday's action. Games will occur at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3 p.m., on four fields. The champion will be crowned on Field One at 3 p.m.

The Redbirds won last season's tournament in dramatic fashion, scoring six runs in their final at bat to knock off DePaul 6-5. The Blue Demons won the 2008 and 2010 tournaments, while no winner was declared in 2009 due to weather.

Adult admission is $12 for a single day or $20 for the tournament. Youth (ages 6-18) and seniors (ages 65 or older) admission is $8 for one day or $12 for the tournament. Children (ages 5 and under) are admitted free.

All admission tickets will be available for purchase at the gate. Parking will be available on the south and north side of Champion Fields. All parking will be available at no charge.
