Redbirds Conclude ICSC with Wins Over Heartland, Ball State

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball team finished the State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship with a pair of victories, Sunday afternoon at Champion Fields. The Redbirds defeated Heartland, 11-0, before besting Ball State, 7-2. ISU went 3-1 during the event.
Game One - Illinois State 11, Heartland 0 (5 inn.)
ISU bounced back from its game two loss on Saturday with a five-inning triumph over the Hawks. After struggling in the Saturday defeat to Olivet Nazarene, Regan Romshek performed considerably better against HCC, tossing all 5.0 innings and recording eight strikeouts.
Stephanie Gallant and Annie Heineman led the way for the Redbirds offensively, each smacking a two-run home run homer in the first and third inning, respectively, to set the tone. Laura Canopy, Kolby Hoffman and Stevie Atterbury each went 2-for-2, while Canopy also walked twice to reach base in all four plate appearances.
Game Two - Illinois State 7, Ball State 2
Taylor Baxter threw her second complete game of the tournament to earn the victory over the Cardinals. She surrendered two runs (no earned) on three hits, while also walking two and striking out two more.
Offensively, the Redbirds utilized a balanced offensive approach. Eight different players registered hits, while seven different players walked. A pair of two-out hits, a two-RBI single by Kelsey Turczyn in the second inning and a double from Gallant in the third, gave ISU a 3-0 advantage.
Ball State closed to within one, making it 3-2 with two runs in the sixth inning, before the Redbirds iced the game with a four-run seventh. Jordan de los Reyes, Turczyn, Hoffman, Nichelle Harrison and Heineman all picked up RBI in the at-bat, before Baxter slammed the door in the bottom half of the frame.
ISU will conclude its fall slate with a doubleheader at Wisconsin, Sunday. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
