NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball team took part in a fall scrimmage against the Heartland Hawks Wednesday evening at Marian Kneer Stadium. No official score was kept, with situational play starting many innings.

"The main purpose of the fall games is to see what you have both offensively and in some defensive situations," 28th-year head coach Melinda Fischer said. "There were some defensive situations that I felt we really needed to work on based on practice, and we were able to do that."

The Redbirds plated runs consistently throughout the contest. Stephanie Gallant, Elizabeth Kay, Kaitlyn Knary, Hayley Marlier, Erin Rodriguez, Regan Romshek and Kelsey Turczyn all drove in tallies during the scrimmage. Romshek and Rodriguez also pitched, in addition to junior Taylor Baxter. Romshek pitched the first three innings of the game, Baxter followed her with two and Rodriquez threw the final two.

ISU also featured some stellar defensive work, cutting down two Hawks at home plate. In the fourth inning, senior Lauren Kellar threw out a runner at home on a fly ball to center field. Then, in the fifth, shortstop Lindsey Greene fielded a grounder in the hole before making a quick throw home to record an out.

The next fall matchup for the Redbirds will be Wednesday, Sept. 19 against Lakeland Community College at Marian Kneer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Then, the Redbirds will play four games as part of the State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30 at Champion Fields in Normal. Lastly, ISU will welcome a team of all-stars from the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league to the Corn Crib in Normal on Sunday, Oct. 7. The two squads will play a double-header, with game times of 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The Redbirds will enter the 2013 season looking to make its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament. In 2011, ISU went 37-23 overall with an 18-8 mark in the MVC before winning the conference tournament. The squad features National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Mideast Region First Team selection and All-Valley Second Team honoree Jhavon Hamilton as well as All-Valley Second Team choices Laura Canopy and Kellar.
