ISU Softball Opens Fall Slate Against Heartland Wednesday

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball team begins its eight-game fall schedule Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., with a scrimmage against Heartland Community College at Marian Kneer Stadium. The scrimmage will feature both normal and situational game play.

The Hawks, who play in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), were never ranked outside of the top six nationally last season. This year's squad returns 11 players, eight of whom started last season. The game against the Redbirds will be one of eight against NCAA Division I competition for the Hawks.

After the game against the Hawks, the Redbirds will play seven more fall exhibitions. One will be at home next Wednesday, Sept. 19 against Lakeland Community College at 6:30 p.m. Then, the Redbirds will play four games as part of the State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30 at Champion Fields in Normal. Lastly, ISU will welcome a team of all-stars from the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league to the Corn Crib in Normal on Sunday, Oct. 7. The two squads will play a double-header, with game times of 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The Redbirds unofficially opened up its fall schedule with the annual Alumni Game Sunday, Sept. 9. The current squad defeated the alums 12-5, with sophomore Lindsey Greene and freshman Brittny Drish leading the way with three RBI apiece.
